The Western Mall

2101 W. 41st St.
In 1968 the Western mall opened as a harbinger of doom to downtown business.
In 1978, Jeff Bray created this fascinating map of the Western Mall as it was at the time. The Western Mall still thrives, but it's much different now, suffering from the same ailment that aflicted the New Town Mall; Anchor stores with no adjoining conduit. The Western Mall does have some very un-mall-like businesses within. Lawyers and school district offices. No KarmelKorn. There is Hoover's SuperKarate in case the Student Loan Finance Corp. is attacked by ninjas. Can never be too careful.
This from Mark's wide collection of classic newspaper clippings.
